Beneil Dariush is a name that is currently on the rise in the world of mixed martial arts. The lightweight fighter has been on an impressive win streak, winning his last eight fights in a row. His recent victories have come against some tough opponents, including Tony Ferguson and Drakkar Klose. His most recent fight was against Mateusz Gamrot, which he won via a unanimous decision.
However, Dariush‘s rise to the top has not been without its challenges. One of the biggest challenges he faced was the cancellation of his highly anticipated bout with Islam Makhachev. The two were scheduled to face each other at UFC Fight Night in February 2022, but the 34-year-old had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Makhachev went on to fight Bobby Green instead.

Chael Sonnen about the canceled Islam Makhachev vs Beneil Dariush fight
Recently, Chael Sonnen revealed that there were plans to reschedule the Dariush vs Makhachev fight, but it was ultimately scrapped. According to ‘The American Gangster’, UFC president Dana White wanted to remake the fight, but Joe Rogan advised him not to. “Dana White walks into a press conference, says he was about to remake Benny versus Islam, but Joe Rogan told him not to,” said Sonnen.
Sonnen also claimed that the Russian has gone heel. With the spotlight on Conor McGregor, Islam Makhachev is in a tight spot, according to the UFC veteran. “Islam Makhachev has gone heel. When you see him, feel free to boo him,” Sonnen said.

The Makhachev vs Dariush fight could have been a free fight if made at that time, but if it happens now, it will be a PPV main event for the title, according to ‘The American Gangster’.
Can Beneil Dariush vs Islam Makhachev happen in the future?
Dariush‘s next fight will be against Charles Oliveira at UFC 288. ‘Do Bronx’ is a formidable opponent, but a win for Dariush could put him in contention for a title shot against Makhachev. With his impressive win streak, the Iranian has already proven that he is a top contender in the lightweight division.

A victory over Oliveira would only solidify his position and give him a shot at the belt. Makhachev, on the other hand, does not have a clear title contender in his sight. This is the perfect opportunity for Dariush to capitalize and land a title shot.
