Kevin Lee announced his retirement recently, which came as a shock to many UFC fans who were looking forward to his comeback. The Michigan native made waves in the UFC in the early days of his career with his speed and athleticism, accumulating a record of 9-2 in the UFC. This led to him fighting Tony Ferguson for the Interim lightweight title at UFC 216. But it seems his MMA journey might have seen its end.
In an interview with Submission Radio, the ‘Motown Phenom’ shed light on the reasons behind his retirement after his comeback loss to Rinat Fakhretdinov in the first round, and how his relationship with UFC boss Dana White is.

When asked about his retirement, the American told the hosts that he was sure he was retiring. And while his first goal was to get healthy, he wants to do well outside the Octagon. “It’s (retirement) a hundred percent. I have to put it (fighting) outside of my mind,” he said. “Right now it’s about getting the surgery, healing myself, and making a lot of money outside the sport.”

The 30-year-old had announced his retirement this earlier this month. In the interview, he pointed to something Dana White said as an important factor in his retirement. “Dana White said it best, and I am taking him at his word now, MMA is more of an opportunity than it is a career… I think you should kind of listen to it and use it as a motivation to do other things in life.”
Lee also talked about his current relationship with Dana White and the UFC and whether he talked with Dana before announcing his retirement.

Talking about Dana White, he revealed that their relationship has had its ups and downs. “I mean me and Dana have a very hot and cold type of relationship. it’s a lot of push and pull there.” he said.
He clarified that he did not talk to Dana before announcing his retirement. “I didn’t talk to him before, but we’ll have a conversation pretty soon I am sure.”

He also pointed out that he and the promotion didn’t always see eye to eye, and, at times, the promotion does things that are good for the UFC but are not so for fighters.
