UFC 297 has just concluded and with that, we have a new middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis. With this win over Sean Strickland, ‘Stillknocks’ has become the first South African to win the title. Their battle went to the last rounds but it was Du Plessis who clinched the ultimate victory by judges’ decision.

However, their war was a bit controversial. Both the fighters showcased resilience. In the last round, Strickland was seemingly more dominant towards Du Plessis but the judges gave the round to the South African. This caught the attention of Dana White who told reporters that he believed Strickland had won the last round. Naturally,  Du Plessis doesn’t seem to have taken White’s words too kindly.

Ddicus Du Plessis ridiculed Dana White’s words about the fight

At the post-fight press conference, the first question that came in front of Dana White was his opinion on the middleweight championship fight. The UFC CEO explained that the fight was close and both the fighters showcased their sportmanship. However, White made a statement that didn’t go too well with the newly crowned champion.

White asserted that he was expecting Sean Strickland to win the fight as the last round was clearly Strickland’s. He said “I had it two-to-two, going into the last round. And I thought Strickland won the last round” said White at the press conference.

Du Plessis in the same press conference disregarded the CEO’s words. He said “Just so for the record, are there some people that think I lost the fight? Dana said it? Bullshit” Well, whether Dana White likes it or not Du Plessis is the new middleweight champion.
