While notable UFC figures like Michael Chandler shared their excitement and appreciation for Edgar, several fans blasted the UFC for their matchmaking. One displeased fan wrote, “Man, the UFC is truly sc*m with how they treat their vets. Dude wanted a fight against a legend that would please the fans. Instead, they give him someone who hasn’t lost in his last 7 fights. Pure disrespect”

Commenting on the fight, one fan said, “Another dangerous fight for Frankie…Gutierrez is no joke. He’s on 7 fight unbeaten streak.”

“I can’t stand the way the UFC treats it’s legends, give him Assuncao,” wrote one fan. “Poor guy really has no friends around him,” said another fan, referring to the fight. Judging by the reactions, fans wanted to see Edgar face other UFC legends like Jose Aldo or Dominick Cruz.

How Did Former UFC Champion Jose Aldo Get the Crazy Scar on His Face?

With Aldo recently retiring, Cruz was the choice for a lot of fans for Edgar’s next fight.

“Why would they not do everything in their power to make Dominick Cruz vs Frankie Edgar? Both coming off losses to Chito, both at the same stage in their career, champs from the same era. Idk, there’s a lot realities in making a fight it just seems like a missed opportunity.”

One fan wished Edgar the best saying “This is bitter sweet. Always been my favorites fighter, cheers to an amazing career Frankie!!”

A Frankie Edgar fight is always something to look forward to. Seeing as this could be his last fight, a lot of eyes will be on Madison Square Garden on November 12.

Throwback to when a UFC mismatch corrected itself

The Frankie Edgar-Chris Gutierrez fight is not the first time the UFC has faced backlash for matchmaking. Fans have bashed the promotion in the past for feeding legends that are retiring or exiting the promotion to up-and-coming killers. A very recent example is the Nate Diaz-Khamzat Chimaev bout that was scheduled for UFC 279.

While the bout raised a lot of hype, a lot of fans were unhappy with the matchup. While one can never count Nate Diaz out of a fight, the majority of fans thought Chimaev would prove too much for him.

In a surprising turn of events, Chimaev missed weight and the UFC had to rearrange the PPV card. Nate Diaz ended up facing Tony Ferguson, who was also on the same card. This fight was more welcomed by the fans, considering the legendary status both fighters have in the MMA community.
