UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman put on a show for the fans at UFC 261 as he knocked out Jorge Masvidal in a brutal manner to retain his throne. Former two-division champion Conor McGregor kept a close eye on how things unfold at the event in Jacksonville, Florida.
‘The Notorious’ took to Twitter to react as he believes he is a force to be reckoned with at the 170 lbs division. McGregor vowed to make a move up to welterweight next year after he captures the lightweight belt this year. “I’m a block at 170 guys. Give me till end of year at this 155 weight. I’ll get the strap and then I’ll go up again. After green fungus panties hahaha “cos any one of these fools can get it” – usman,” he wrote.

Usman just knocked out one of the best strikers in the UFC. It’s a scary thought for the rest of the division, considering the champion’s tremendous grappling pedigree. And now he has proved he is equally dangerous with his hands. That was the first time ‘Gamebred‘ has been knocked out in his 50-fight professional career.
McGregor has previously fought at the 170 lbs division of the UFC 3 times. Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone were his opponents on those 3 outings. His record stands at 2-1 at welterweight. Whether he is actually looking to make a move up again remains to be seen. For now, he should focus on Dustin Poirier after being knocked out in his last fight.
Where does Conor McGregor fit into the welterweight division?
McGregor is currently looking to make a run at the UFC lightweight title. His aspirations took a major hit when he was stopped by ‘The Diamond‘ in January. The duo completes their trilogy at UFC 264 with the winner expected to fight the winner of the lightweight title bout at UFC 262.

Usman is expected to defend his belt against Colby Covington next. He will have an array of challengers coming at him. The 170 lbs division is a shark tank in its own merit. So, whether ‘The Notorious’ actually makes the proposed move is not clear. But with him, anything is possible.
