UFC BMF champion and no.2 ranked UFC lightweight contender, Justin Gaethje is one of the few fighters who will be lucky enough to fight at the historic UFC 300. He will be defending the BMF title against UFC featherweight, Max Holloway. But what are the chances for a divisional title shot for ‘The Highlight’?

On the same card, Charles Oliveira will be going up against Arman Tsarukyan for the no. 1 contender spot for the lightweight title. However, the former interim champion believes that he still might have a chance to secure the title shot after UFC 300.

Justin Gaethje talks about a potential title shot after UFC 300

Justin Gaethje, in a recent interview with MMA journalist Brett Okamoto, revealed that he still had hopes for a title shot if he wins at UFC 300. He claimed that there were many instances where the UFC and Dana White failed to follow up on their words, especially when it came to title shots. ‘The Highlight’ stated, “There’s so many factors that can happen. And so yeah, again, I thought that I and Poirier were in… I’m pretty sure that he said… actually I can’t say. But I want to say that I thought that he said that that was a title eliminator fight.”

Gaethje went on to talk about his win against Poirier, as he said, “I fought that fight. I got a knockout in the second-round, beautiful knockout beautiful finish. Against the number two guy in the world, a veteran in Dustin Poirier, and I’m pretty sure you say I’m not going to hold them to it.”

“Because I love the fact that anything can change in this, my life, quarter mile at a time I’ve lived since day one, so the fact that everything keeps, you know, mumbling and juggling, I’m okay with it. Because it’s one day at a time for me,” said Gaethje, as he still seemed to be in high spirits as the lightweight champion looked to be more focused on his fight against Max Holloway.

Given that the former UFC interim lightweight champion is set to defend his belt against Max Holloway. But given that the former featherweight champion fights at a weight class lower than Gaethje, why is Holloway moving up in weight?

Max Holloway on fighting for the UFC BMF title

Many people wondered why ‘Blessed’ was taking on Justin Gaethje given that he probably could’ve secured a title shot at the featherweight division if he just waited. However, fans were still grateful to see ‘Blessed’ take on ‘The Highlight’ at UFC 300.

Holloway stated that he decided to fight Gaethje because he was available to fight at UFC 300. He said, “The BMF belt is great. Being right there at 155, and being that the 155-pound weight class is right there, just 10 pounds away from 145, I can do both classes. Why not throw my name in the hat?”
