WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s Homecoming Labeled a “Bad Deal” by Ex-Olympian & MMA World Champion

Brittney Griner has finally been released after being imprisoned for 10 months in Russia. Viktor Bout, a former weapons trader, was transferred to Russia in return for the WNBA star’s release. Furthermore, this news has generated a great deal of talk and drawn a wide range of viewpoints. One such distinct perspective came from the former UFC fighter, Ben Askren. Not only his take is a little contentious, but he also gave the WNBA star a rather unflattering moniker.

Ben Askren calls the Brittney Griner swap a bad deal

Amidst all the talk surrounding Brittney Griner, the former MMA champion Ben Askren has passed on a fairly controversial take on the subject. The 38-year-old took on Twitter to express his opinion and called the trade between the WNBA star and Viktor Bout a ‘bad deal’. Not only that, Askren gave Griner a nickname that wasn’t quite nice.

Askren wrote, “We traded an arms dealer for a pot head?? Seems like a bad deal” while addressing Griner as a ‘pot head’. However, the ‘Funky’ isn’t the first one to have criticized the trade. There have been some mixed reactions online regarding this action.

Nevertheless, the NBA community is absolutely delighted by the news. However, it is still unclear what the WNBA has in store for her going forward.

The major question following Brittney Griner‘s homecoming is, what’s next for her in the WBNA? Whether Griner will return to the sport or not has been the subject of intense discussion. Cathy Engelbert, the WNBA commissioner, offered her perspective on the matter. Engelbert stated, “We’re going to give some time and space, but she’ll know we’re all ready to help.”

Discussing Griner‘s future in WNBA, Engelbert stated, “We’ll follow what Brittney and her family want to do about re-engaging with the WNBA and our players.”
