For a long time, the most competitive divisions for women in the UFC have been the strawweight and the flyweight divisions, but things aren’t as competitive in the bantamweight division. Meanwhile, in the wake of Kayla Harrison‘s arrival at the UFC, Daniel Cormier recently stated that she could end up being in the same situation as Amanda Nunes as a 135-pounder, causing problems for Dana White.
Kayla Harrison jumped ship from the PFL to the UFC not too long ago. Following her move, Dana White announced that she would be taking on former champion Holly Holm at UFC 300. Daniel Cormier and Ryan Clark discussed Harrison’s advent to the UFC, and the latter seemed to believe that it could do a lot of good for the bantamweight division.

During a recent episode of the ‘DC & RC’ show, Ryan Clark mentioned that he was all in with Kayla Harrison joining the UFC. The former 2-time Olympic gold medalist judoka has already racked up a 15-1 record before joining the UFC, and people are expecting her to make a significant impact in Dana White’s promotion. Moreover, Clark believes that if Harrison defeats Holly Holm on her debut, there are chances that Amanda Nunes could make her return to fight the 33-year-old new UFC signee.

“If Kayla Harrison beats Holly Holm, Amanda Nunes will come out of retirement to fight her next. So, I totally tap in on Kayla Harrison now being a part of the UFC bantamweight division,” said Ryan Clark. However, Daniel Cormier had a concern regarding that division. He is worried that Kayla Harrison could become another Amanda Nunes. Let’s see what he had to say.
Dana White could get into a problem if Harrison becomes the new Amanda Nunes
Amanda Nunes is arguably the greatest female MMA fighter ever. She is the first female double champion in the UFC and remained dominant till her very last fight in 2023. As such, Daniel Cormier is worried that Kayla Harrison could replicate a similar kind of success to Nunes. He is all in with the idea of her joining the UFC. However, if Harrison ends up dominating each opponent, Cormier believes it could cause problems for Dana White in the bantamweight division due to the lack of fighters who would give her a real challenge inside the Octagon.

“I believe that I tap in that she’s there. I just wonder if we go right back into another Amanda Nunes situation, where you have a real dominant champion over a division that doesn’t seem to have the depth to really challenge her,” said Daniel Cormier. He wants to inject some real excitement into the division, but since ‘DC’ claims that there is no real competition in the 135-pound division, he doesn’t think getting rid of that division altogether would cause any problems for the UFC.

Not too long ago, Dana White decided to retire the women’s featherweight champion. This decision was made after the division’s talent pool diminished drastically over time. Hence, there is no reason why the UFC CEO may not make the same move for the bantamweight division. However, we are still not there yet as we wait to see how things pan out in the months to come.
