Tony Ferguson is a genius when it comes to fighting,” Joe Rogan famously declared during the peak of Ferguson’s career. Back in his prime, the Oxnard product was a force of nature, captivating fans with his unorthodox style and relentless tenacity. However, the once-dominant fighter has been absent from the UFC Octagon since August last year, following a defeat to fellow veteran Michael Chiesa. The loss was a bitter blow, marking ‘El Cucuy’s’ eighth consecutive defeat and an unfortunate low point in his otherwise remarkable career.

As the 40-year-old’s losing streak continued, retirement rumors began to swirl, further fueled by UFC boss Dana White, who candidly expressed his thoughts: “I hope so, yeah. I would like to see Tony Ferguson retire.” Despite the mounting pressure and calls for him to step away, “El Cucuy” remained resolute, refusing to let the narrative of his career end on someone else’s terms.

In early 2025, Tony Ferguson gave fans a glimmer of hope by posting a cryptic yet inspiring message: “Stay tuned and watch the magic unfold.” That promise has now become a reality. Today, the Global Fighting League (GFL), an emerging MMA organization, announced the signing of  former 155lbs contender, marking the official conclusion of his legendary UFC career. The news was further confirmed by Kevin Lee, Ferguson’s former UFC rival, who has also joined GFL. Speaking with Ariel Helwani, Lee revealed that ‘El Cucuy’ was on the verge of signing with the promotion and hinted at the possibility of rekindling their rivalry under the GFL banner.

Fans in disbelief as Tony Ferguson joins Global Fighting League (GFL)

Earlier this year, Khabib Nurmagomedov ignited controversy and a fiery “Dagestan vs. Ireland” debate in combat sports while promoting his cousin Usman Nurmagomedov’s upcoming fight against the Irish sensation Paul Hughes. Khabib stoked the flames on X, proclaiming, “Dagestani fighters dominate MMA,” prompting a sharp retort from Tony Ferguson: “Shut up, F-thead 🖕🦹‍♂️ You’re still my b-tch. You fought 2-round ‘pro’ padded fights leading up to the @ufc.”

In response, Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, took to Twitter on behalf of the Nurmagomedov family, issuing a challenge: “Now you can fight @teamkhabib’s brother in GFL @NurmagomedovMMA punk.” The target of the challenge was Abubakar Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s 25-year-old cousin, who had recently signed with the GFL. Fans quickly reacted, with one commenting, “OMFG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!! I need Abubakar vs Tony!!!!” Another fan suggested a potential fight with Dillon Danis for Tony Ferguson, writing, “Give him Dillon Danis.”

The news of the Oxnard product’s signing with GFL has stirred mixed emotions among fans. Some are excited to see him continue his career with a new promotion, while others are heartbroken that his legendary UFC run has come to an end. One devastated fan captured the collective sadness in a heartfelt comment: “Whoever did this should be in jail.”

Meanwhile, others remain confused about the details of his departure from the UFC, with one asking, “When was he released?” Tony Ferguson compounds this confusion still being listed on the UFC welterweight roster, despite Dana White’s previous comments suggesting he hoped ‘El Cucuy’ would retire. The Oxnard native, however, has been clear about his intentions, defiantly stating, “I’m gonna fight until the wheels fall off.”

The tension between Tony Ferguson and the UFC, particularly with White’s stance on retirement, could explain why the two paths diverged. Another fan echoed the uncertainty, wondering, “When did he get released?” With no official update on Ferguson’s contract, fans are left speculating about his current status within the UFC. Only the California native and Dana White hold the answers. Some fans are also frustrated by the UFC’s decision not to give ‘El Cucuy’ one last fight or a proper send-off. One such fan commented, “What a shame, he deserved at least a video package. Absolute legend, fighter’s fighter, you will be missed.”
