Khabib Nurmagomedov shocked the MMA world when he bid adieu to the octagon in October 2020, leaving behind an impeccable record of 29-0-0. He submitted Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 and earned the much-desired pound-for-pound top rank simultaneously, capping off his career as an undefeated fighter. His retirement news left the fans disheartened, as they wanted to see more of ‘The Eagle’ in action. But the former UFC lightweight champion was adamant about his decision.

However, Khabib’s reasons for retiring were personal, as he had promised his mother that he would no longer fight after the tragic passing of his father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Having said that, more than two years after his retirement, Khabib has hinted at a comeback, but not in the mixed-martial arts realm, leaving his fans baffled with amusing guesses.

Despite retiring from fighting, Khabib Nurmagomedov remained actively involved in the sport as a coach for a good few years. He mentored ‘Team Khabib’ in their octagon endeavours and imparted his knowledge and skills to his fellow countrymen and relatives. However, after a point, it seemed like Khabib had done everything he could, and it was time for him to focus on his family.

The American Kickboxing Academy coach, Javier Mendez, recently talked about Khabib’s decision to retire completely from MMA and revealed the real reason behind it. “He just doesn’t want to miss being a father,” Mendez told Yahoo Sports. “He talked to me about three weeks ago and told me of his plan and said he planned to talk to the team and inform them of his decision. He’s doing this for the right reasons. He’s a family man, and he simply wants to spend more time with his family.”
