Injuries are a painful but constant part of mixed martial arts. Many fighters, such as Cain Velasquez, Dominick Cruz, and, to an extent, Khabib Nurmagomedov, have not been able to reach their full potential due to injuries. However, Joe Rogan has a potentially effective, albeit controversial, idea to help injured fighters, which would not go down well with most UFC fans.

The UFC commentator, a vocal advocate for fighters’ welfare even when it conflicts with the business interests of the UFC, thinks that injured UFC fighters should be allowed to take certain substances that quicken recovery but are banned under the current anti-doping regime. The JRE podcast host also thinks that many professional athletes, such as NFL athletes, maybe on steroids in the off-season. In a conversation with fitness author Cameron Hanes on his podcast, he explained the reason behind this contentious stance.

Joe Rogan on why certain banned substances should be allowed in the UFC

During the podcast, Rogan and Hanes got to discussing optimizing their health by using substances like testosterone. Rogan told his guest about certain substances and peptides, such as thymosin and BPC 157, that have been used by athletes to recover quickly from injuries and disease.

These substances, however, are banned by anti-doping bodies, including the USADA, and athletes could face punishment if they test positive for them. Rogan felt that UFC fighters who have been injured should be allowed to use substances such as the above-mentioned ones during their rest and rehab to quicken the recovery process.

The podcast host clarified that he was not in favor of fighters being allowed to use full-on steroids, such as Trenbolone, and only favors certain substances that help heal quicker for the duration that the fighters are recovering from an injury.

Rogan also felt that other athletes, such as football players, use certain substances that may be banned in their league for recovery during the off-season. “But listen, if you can get a hold of any NFL player in between camp, like what are the odds they’re [not taking PEDs]?” Rogan asked Hanes.

Rogan thinks baseball created the disdain for steroid usage

Rogan told Hanes that the 90’s ‘Steroid Era’ of baseball was what made the American public detest steroid usage and equate it with cheating. He felt that baseball players like Barry Bonds and their alleged steroid abuse, which gave them an unfair advantage over their competitors, is what stigmatized their use in the country.

However, Rogan maintained that using certain PEDs is beneficial for fighters. He gave the example of BJJ maestro Gordon Ryan as someone who had been able to leverage steroids to get back in fighting shape following an injury.
