“An Amazing Person”: US Olympic Star Sydney McLaughlin on Training With Flo-Jo’s Former Coach

Many athletes won big in this year’s Tokyo Olympics. One person who has gone under the radar is Sydney McLaughlin. She won the gold medal for the 400-meters hurdles competition and blew everyone’s minds. Moreover, she set a world record in the competition, becoming the first woman to set a time of sub 52 in the competition. Hence, with the talent she has, she can only be better.

Just 22-years old, she might have found one of the greatest coaches to work with. Bobby Kersee has guided top talents in athletics like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Griffith-Joyner, and now Allyson Felix. McLaughlin moved from her previous coach to join hands with him.

Bobby Kersee has trained some of the seasoned veterans on the track. Felix has maintained her longevity and won yet another medal in Tokyo. She won the bronze medal for her signature 400-meter competition. In the same way, Flo-Jo is the current world record holder of both the 100 and 200-meters competitions. Despite Thompson-Herah’s efforts to reach those times, she still stands above the rest of her competition. Hence, it would be great for McLaughlin to improve on her career in the future. She talked about the experience of working with her new coach and how Felix helped her to stay focused.

“One thing I have learned from Allyson over this year is to trust the process and Bobby’s timing. He will always make sure we are ready to go when it matters. We definitely sync up during workouts sometimes. It’s fun having someone so talented pushing me to be better,” said McLaughlin.

“Training under Bobby has been amazing. He is such a seasoned coach, as well as an amazing person. Our bond has grown stronger over the course of this year, and I look forward to seeing where our journey takes us,” said McLaughlin.

With the Paris Olympics 2024 set to happen in two years’ time, Sydney McLaughlin hopes to even better her existing world record. Competing at the highest level is important for most athletes, as she looks to begin a new chapter in her already illustrious career.
