Arnold Schwarzenegger and his ex-wife Maria Shriver are parents of four children. While they hail from different backgrounds and upbringings, they complemented one another to create a holistic environment and provide a “normal” childhood for their kids. The Gift of Forgiveness author, who is a mother of two, looks up to her mom and dad for parenting inspiration. 

In an Instagram Live chat in 2021 with Katherine, their first-born, Schwarzenegger gave a realistic take on their childhood. While she owes it to her parents for giving them a regular childhood, the former governor of California intervened when she describes it as “normal.”

“What is it normal?” 

Katherine Schwarzenegger answered the most asked question on how their parents could give them a normal childhood. Speaking of which, she described it as one of the biggest gifts their parents gave them. Despite her parents being sought-after and influential figures in society, she said, “we were very normal kids.” The Terminator star intervened, “Excuse me..but I mean..”

He continued, “What is it normal?” and pointed out the originality of their lives. The former bodybuilding champion highlighted their financial status and privileges of stardom and lineage. That said, Schwarzenegger admitted that he and Shriver made an “unbelievable attempt” to let their children enjoy the pleasures everyone their age enjoys.

They had friends, play dates, went to a normal school, and took part in all the events. “You came to our soccer games.. we did all the things that our friends were doing..you and mom never took us to premieres growing up.. you wanted us to have our own identity..” she added. The action star drew comparisons between their diametrically opposite upbringing, which resulted in a combination of Shriver’s gentle, softer, and supportive and Schwarzenegger’s strict, disciplined parenting styles.
