“Means the World to Me”- Simone Biles Lauds Serena Williams as She Joins Her in Wheaties Club

Simone Biles emerged as the G.O.A.T. of gymnastics within a short span of her competitive career. She has also been an ardent speaker on mental health. Her most notable stand on the topic was at the Tokyo Olympics. At the meet, the athlete dropped off from multiple events citing mental health concerns.

Recently, the cereal brand, Wheaties, tweeted to announce the inclusion of the seven-time Olympic medalist in their Limited Edition Century Collector series to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary.

Additionally, two other legendary athletes –  Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan will joining Biles in their stand-alone feature in the orange boxes. Biles’ Wheaties box is the “final” box in the series.

Simone Biles shares video to announce her first feature in the Wheaties box

The two-time Olympian retweeted the news after the cereal brand tweeted the announcement. Moreover, the gymnast posted a video to share the news with her fans.

It will mark Biles’ first feature in the orange boxes, which have been associated with prominent athletes for over eight decades. In the video, her excitement over the prospect of featuring alongside two legends is evident.

In the video, Biles said, “I’m honored to share with you that I’m joining a very unique club in landing my first Wheaties box.

 

“Growing up I looked up to Dominique Dawes and Serena Williams. It’s always important to see someone who looks like you succeeding, and to share the title of Wheaties Champion with them means the world to me,” the gymnast added.

The brand’s official site states that the new boxes labeled “Limited Edition Gold Box” will be available this summer. However, Biles mentioned in the video that the new print will arrive this month.

How did the tradition of including athletes in their cereal boxes start?

The breakfast cereal company’s sports-oriented strategy began in 1927, when it began advertising in minor league baseball. With time, their popularity increased, becoming a part of sports traditions in the US.

In 1933, they incorporated the slogan “Breakfast of Champions” to make the brand more relatable for sports enthusiasts. Since its first athlete feature in 1934, the company has come a long way in establishing itself as a collector’s item. By the early 1940’s, prominent athletes were swarming for a feature on their cereal boxes.

Major athletes featured on the distinct orange boxes include Michael Phelps, Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, and Mikaela Shiffrin.
