The mounted pressure consumed the gymnastics brilliancies to give the top women champions today. After the annual U.S. Classic earlier this month, this weekend’s Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships added to the qualifiers list. The 2022 World Champions were the most anticipated names in the tally during the heat of the moment. Last year, Jade Carey secured third place in the all-around, won a gold medal in the vault, and earned a bronze on the floor, making her a formidable contender for a spot. However, she missed out on joining the lineup of ten gymnasts who advanced to the camps next month gunning for the Games.

The 23-year-old gymnast is well-known in the sport for her vault and floor routines. With the supernova Simone Biles making her comeback after a two-year professional hiatus, the dynamics seem to have taken the community by shock. As day 2 came to an end, the medal standings overpowered the dreams of Carey who previously shared positive prospects.

Gymnastics scores keep Jade Carey away from the 2024 Paris Olympics

A thrilling evening of the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships at SAP Center in San Jose came to an end on August 27. To the fans’ disappointment the 2023-24 Senior Women’s National Team did not include the 2022 Worlds vault gold medalist Carey. On Day 2 finals, she scored 14.550 on the vault, 13.250 on uneven bars, 12.050 on the balance beam, and 13.100 on the floor.

Despite having a perfect vault score the remaining three apparatus pulled her total down to 52.950. On Day 1 Carey managed to earn a total of 51.500 points, her combined scores totaled 104.450. Lee’s all-around and winningest competitor Simone Biles set a record by winning her eighth all-around title.

Biles was joined by the 2023 U.S. Championships UB gold medalist Shi Jones, 2023 U.S. Classic 2X silver medalist Leanne Wong, and 2022 Worlds BB silver medalist Skye Blakely. Fellow gymnasts Jordan Chiles, Katelyn Jong, Joscelyn Roberson,  Tiana Sumanasekera, Kayla DiCello, and Amelia Disidore also joined the list. USA Gymnastics updated with the qualified names on their Twitter account. 

In the end, Carey was joined by Olympic all-around gold medalist Sunisa Lee who withdrew from half of the apparatus due to kidney issues. While Carey stood in the fifteenth spot, Lee tied the last 27th position with Lexi Zeiss with a total two-day score of 54.600. The internet had mixed feelings about Carey’s loss after her vault scores, while many wished she qualified for the Paris Olympics. The defeat was more discouraging as it was followed by her declaration to restart her gymnastics journey.

This month, the Oregon State University gymnast Carey discussed how the pressure of competing had an effect on her training. In an exclusive interview with Olympics.com, she confessed, “I think the past month or so has been pretty challenging for me.” She admitted to pushing her boundaries to perform flawlessly at all times and emphasized stepping back.

Now, although she will miss the camp and world championship, next year will be closing the last opportunity for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 2024 World Cup Series will have an additional two quotas per gender for each apparatus which will be available for the remaining gymnasts. For Carey, who is cementing her name in the sport, it is now or never with less than a year till the Games.
