?I?ll Be Happier With You Gone?: Jackie Chan Once Cracked a Dark Joke About His Wife, That Made Everyone Around Them Laugh

It’s been more than 40 years since Jackie Chan has been married to his wife Joan Lin. The martial-artist-turned-movie-star first met the Taiwanese actress i.e. Lin, in January 1981. They soon hit it off and got married the following year in Los Angeles. A marriage this long is bound to have been through a lot of hurdles as well as some wonderful moments. But Chan and his wife have embraced every occasion together. It was this bond between them, that made it comfortable for Chan to crack this dark, morbid joke about his wife once.

It is years of togetherness that can make a husband this fond of his wife. Comfortable enough to make a joke like that. It was during a dinner that Jackie Chan and Joan Lin were having with some of their friends once when the Hongkongese superstar cracked a joke at his wife’s expense.

Jackie Chan in his autobiography, talks about various aspects from various time periods of his life. One person who has been with him from almost the start of his acting career is his wife Joan Lin. On one occasion, Chan also felt enormous gratitude towards his wife, after she was indifferent to finding out about an affair of his. His love and adulation for his wife clearly express themselves in various corners of the book.

In one such place, he described how he wouldn’t even miss her after she passes away. This clear attempt at humor broke the ice. Chan’s autobiography ‘Never Grow Up: With Zhu Mo’, describes this. Chan says to his wife as they were discussing aging, “Ha! I?ll be happier with you gone” which immediately made light of the situation, and broke everyone into laughter. Including his wife Joan Lin. The joke was in response to Lin saying, “I?m afraid that when I?m gone, there?ll be no one to take care of you”.

While it’s hard to shed light on every moment Chan and Lin shared together, it is clear from this exchange, that despite such jokes, they are extremely important to each other.

Lin, not failing her sense of humor, laughed at first along with their friends. She then replied to Chan, “You say that now, but just see how you get on without me. You?ll be so lonely, poor thing”. It was as if her heart, filled with nothing but love, was yearning for a sense of belonging from her husband. As that moment passed, Chan and Lin heard two of their friends, a couple, about their experience of being married together for decades.

It was a moment to ponder for both Chan and his wife. It’s not like Chan hasn’t expressed his love for Lin in an outspoken manner. In the book, released in 2015, he also wrote, “We?ve stuck together and come to cherish each other more and more with every year, after thirty-five years. We?ll always be family”. And they still are.
