In addition to being a martial arts God, Bruce Lee was also an avid actor. Some of his movies, such as Enter the Dragon, are considered cult classics even today. Not only did he act in his movies, he even wrote scripts for some and directed the fight scenes in many. Because of his interest in filmmaking, it is no surprise that he knew the Hong Kong film producer, Raymond Chow Man-wai.

Recently, a picture of them shaking hands resurfaced on the internet, and it immediately sparked nostalgia in Bruce Lee fans.

The photo was posted by the official Bruce Lee Instagram account. The comments by the fans made it crystal clear how much they missed Lee. One fan wrote, “A timeless dap! 💪 Both legends” Another fan almost could not handle the pain of remembrance, and commented, “Nah mate, can’t believe you’ve done this”.

One fan also commented on Lee’s dapper look in the photo, “Bruce with beard❤️” The entire comments section was filled with love and appreciation for the amazing man who left us way too early. Raymond Chow was the producer who discovered the greatness that was Lee and brought the legend to us. Unfortunately, Chow passed away in November 2018 as well.

How Chow discovered a superstar

Raymond Chow used to work with a production company called Shaw Brothers. However, he soon broke apart from them to start a production company of his own, which he named Golden Harvest. Golden Harvest signed Lee in 1971, and Chow predicted that Lee was going to be a superstar. Chow believed Lee’s presence was magnetic and majestic and would attract the audience. And he was spot on in his prediction.

The first three movies that Chow made starring Lee were all major hits in Hong Kong cinema. Enter the Dragon became the first Chinese martial arts film to be produced by a big Hollywood production house, Warner Brothers. The film was only made using $500,000 and earned $40m at the box office. However, the untimely and devastating death of Lee put this to a stop, till Chow signed Jackie chan.

The contribution of both Bruce Lee and Raymond Chow in bringing martial arts to Hollywood was precious and undeniable. Chow gave us two stars that will always shine bright in the history of martial arts cinema.
