“It Was Really Classy”: NHL GOAT Wayne Gretzky Has a Wish Before His Goal Record Breaks

When Wayne Gretzky is enjoying his time working as an analyst for TNT, Alex Ovechkin is busy breaking Gordie Howe’s record by scoring his 808th goal against Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. Ovechkin’s next milestone is Ice Hockey legend Gretzky since he is only 86 goals behind the G.O.A.T. The Great One seemed to be really proud of this. Gretzky would even like to attend Ovechkin’s game when he is about to reach the record of 894 goals.

 

Previously, Gretzky had remarked on the potential in Ovechkin and said that it was a matter of time before the leftwinger breaks his record. This is what the Great One had to say about “Alexander The Great”.

Wayne Gretzky appreciates Ovechkin

In his 20 seasons, Gretzky broke and created numerous records. Now as Ovechkin is on his way to surpassing him, the White Tornado put a step forward to appreciate him. He said, “If Alex does break the record, I’ll hopefully be one of the first guys to shake his hand.” And he predicted correctly, “We said a year ago that it’s a matter of when he’s going to do it. So, it’s great for the game. It’s a positive and I think that it couldn’t happen to a better person. He’s been great for our sport.”

Moreover, he admired a little gesture from NHL defensemen Mark and Marty Howe toward Ovechkin. They supported Ovi while he was chasing their father’s record. This reminded him how Gordie Howe was there for him when Gretzky was breaking Howe’s record. He liked it and said, “And I thought it was really classy of Mark and Marty to be following Alex when he was chasing Gordie.” Like Howe, the Great One also wanted to be present in Ovechkin’s success.

The 36-year-old is playing his 18th season and is trailing to break Gretzky’s record. The NHL legend promised to be there when he accomplishes it. In an interview, Gretzky shared, “When it comes to the right time, I’m not going to go to every game now till 895, but when he gets close, obviously, I’d love to be there.”
