Usain Bolt has achieved almost everything there is to, in the Track and Field discipline. His lightning run that started at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 never really slowed down till his last Olympics in Rio in 2016. Now, he joins an elite list alongside other greats such as Simone Biles, Pele, and Michael Phelps among others. Let’s know more about the honor bestowed on him.

Usain Bolt was honored with The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award this year. It added yet another feather to his cap. His glittering record of 8x Olympic gold medals and 11x World Championships Gold remains unmatched by anyone to date. He is also the only sprinter to win Gold in 100m and 200m in 3 successive Olympics – Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016.

Usain Bolt’s glorious accomplishments in his 13-year-long career

Reflecting on his athletics career, Bolt said: “I feel accomplished. I accomplished all I wanted to in my sport.” Looking back at his career, Bolt has every right to make that claim. His legion of fans amassed over his 13-year-long career also attests to that fact. Bolt was humbled by this honor, and he thanked his dad for pushing him to work hard. He said, “It is a great feeling to know that with the determination and sacrifice that I put in I could accomplish what I wanted to”.

Bolt broke many firsts during his career and achieved feats that weren’t known mere mortals could achieve. Setting the 100-meter world record of 9.69 seconds, Bolt himself bettered it with 9.58 seconds in 2009. Similarly, he also set the world record for 200 meters with 19.30 seconds in 2008. He broke that record in 2009 with 19.19 seconds.

He said, “I try to motivate people by telling them to believe in themselves.” Bolt’s words of encouragement never went in vain.

While Usain Bolt has deservedly made the list, he joins only two other Track and Field athletes – Sebastian Coe and Jessica Ennis-Hill, both from the UK. Boxing legend Frank Bruno and Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros were the first two recipients of this award. However, when legendary Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson won it the following year, BBC announced it as a new accolade to be awarded every year.
