The recently concluded Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships was a treat for gymnastics fans for many reasons. Be it witnessing Simone Biles’ greatness or Sunisa Lee‘s comeback, who struggled with her health for a year, the U.S. Gymnastics championship ended on a memorable note.

As far as Simone Biles’s performance is concerned, the dominating force herself graced the competitive stage for the second time after her hiatus since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In the wake of her record-breaking eighth national title win, Biles emerged not only as a champion but as a beacon of guidance, particularly for her fellow gymnast, Suni Lee. Now, after dominating the championship, Biles came with a bold message for the 20 YO phenom Sunni Lee.

Biles, after her win, took center stage not just on the mat but also in the post-championship press conference. Biles was asked, “How much can your path and the things that you’ve overcome maybe be an example for somebody like Suni, who’s had such a tumultuous year with, like, health things that you know that come up that are unforeseen, and have you talked to her or been kind of a guiding light for her at all through this?”

In response, she gracefully weaved together her personal journey and her perspective on Lee’s challenges. With a thoughtful tone, she began by acknowledging the dynamic nature of their relationship, mentioning that the age difference played a role, and how Jordan Chiles has also been a pillar of strength to Suni Lee.

However, Biles didn’t shy away from the core message she wanted to convey. She commended Lee’s resilience in overcoming the hurdles life had thrown at her. Biles found inspiration in Lee’s ability to come back stronger recognizing the positive impact it had on younger gymnasts who looked up to them.

She also reminded Lee that taking care of herself and her body should be her main concern, saying, “Whether that’s mentally or physically, take that break and come back and be stronger because at the end of the day, gymnastics is just what we do and we also have to remember that and we’re not going to be doing this forever”.  Suni Lee’s journey at the championships was a rollercoaster of resilience.

What does Suni Lee hope for next?

At the SAP Center, Lee, dressed in a dazzling white leotard, graced the podium with a smile and a wave. Sunisa Lee’s participation held far greater significance than her tie for the 27th spot. Despite a fall on the beam, she roared back on Night 2 with a score of 14.2, clinching third place with a combined 27.850.

Her vault scores, 9.15 and 9.2, showed consistency, though her vault’s lower difficulty impacted her scores. Missing the national team, her focus and hope shifted to earning a spot at the 2023 World Championships camp. As the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will be held soon in Antwerp, Belgium, from September 30 to October 8, Lee’s sights are set on the future.
