Asher Hong trains with the Stanford University men’s gymnastics team. The Ivy League college has over $30 billion endowment, most of which goes into training the stars of tomorrow. Stanford has used the money to train legendary athletes such as Katie Ledecky and Tiger Woods.

The former is one of the most decorated swimmers with five Olympic gold medals, while the latter is a legend in golfing with 82 PGA Tour victories. Now, the college has produced a rising star in gymnastics in the form of Asher Hong.

Gymnastics Now immortalized his breakthrough moment in an Instagram post, stating, “There’s a new U.S. men’s all-around national champion, and it’s none other than Asher Hong!” The teen sensation gave it his all to claim the title, which was evident in his post-victory stance.

Hong attempted the extremely difficult vault called the full-twisting, double Tsukahara. The last person to successfully land this vault was Ri Se Gwang in the 2016 Rio Olympics. To everyone’s astonishment, Hong nailed the vault with flawless execution and erupted in a loud roar, yelling, “Let’s go!” in the direction of his Standford teammates. However, the Texan had one more event to go before he could earn the all-around title. His solid performance on the parallel bars next set his victory in stone.

Asher Hong’s remarkable victory

Asher Hong participated in 12 events in 48 hours and earned a total score of 170.930. Fellow Standford gymnast Khoi Young came second with 169.455 points. Hong etched his name on the history books as the first teenager to win the all-around title in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships since John Orozco’s epic victory in 2012.

After the championships, he spoke to correspondents from Olympics.com, saying, “I feel great about everything, it started a little bit slow with the competition”.

His highest score at the Xfinity US National Gymnastics Championship came from the vault event. Hong earned 15.105, showcasing the incredible value of his training at the Stanford gym. Now, it remains to be seen if the freshman can rise to the level of his predecessors from the college and follow in their footsteps to greatness.
