Being honored for their accomplishments on the course is something that helps track and field athletes all over the world stay motivated to keep pushing the boundaries. For Jamaican icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, there aren’t many things that she doesn’t have the boasting rights for. While the legendary sprinter stole the show at the recently held RJR Gleaner Awards in Kingston, she ultimately had to make way for national teammate Shericka Jackson at the end of the night.
And yet, Fraser-Pryce remains poised and not too shy to share words of congratulations for her comrades, who walked away with another major addition to their award shelves. Shelly-Ann remains a national legend, and her latest social media post highlights just why she holds a special place in her fans’ hearts.

In a recent post on Instagram, the three-time Olympic gold medalist took a moment to shower praise on the winners at the Jamaican ceremony. The post is accompanied by several photos of the five-time Diamond League winner looking dapper in her beautiful dress. While many would feel disappointed in having to lose out to their younger colleagues, Shelly-Ann highlighted her sportsmanship in the post yet again which has helped throttle her among the world’s elites.

“Had the pleasure of attending and being nominated, yet again, for the #RJRGleaner National Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year Awards“, wrote Fraser-Pryce in her Instagram post. However, at the end of the day, it was revealed that Shericka Jackson won the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year Award thanks to her incredible performance at the World Championships in 2023.
While Shelly-Ann would justifiably feel the blues for not being able to defend her title successfully, she took the unanimous decision with a smile. “Shoutout to this year’s deserving winners, who truly displayed an impressive year’s work on the track“, wrote the ten-time World Athletics Champion Fraser-Pryce. While the 37-year-old missed out on the title this year, the award was only graced by the winners of the night.

The country’s top talents bagging the honors
The Sportswoman of the Year award was bestowed on Shelly-Ann’s national teammate and five-time Olympic medalist Shericka Jackson. The 29-year-old won one gold medal at the 200m race in Budapest, along with two silvers in the 100m event and the 4x100m relay, the last of which came thanks to the joint performances of the Jamaican national team, which also included Shelly-Ann.

The Sportsman of the Year award was given to Antonio Watson thanks to his gold-hauling 400m run at the 2023 World Championships. With the Olympics coming up, now it remains to be seen if Fraser-Pryce can bid adieu to her illustrious career with one last bang on the grandest stage.
