At 40 years old and against all odds, hiker Briana DeSanctis achieved a remarkable feat, becoming the first woman to conquer the entire American Discovery Trail on her own. After covering an impressive 6,800 miles, she finally reached her long-awaited destination at Limantour Beach.
It was the perfect end to her two-year adventure. Her determination to inspire young women and conquer the longest hiking trail in the U.S. was the driving force behind her journey, which began on January 1, 2022, in Delaware.

Originally from Maine, she worked hard and saved up money while working as a bartender. DeSanctis’ approach to the trail was full of twists and turns; an ever-evolving journey fueled by spontaneity.
While some days saw her covering an impressive 34 miles, others were spent taking a break and enjoying multiple zero-mile days. Even moments spent away from the trail due to family emergencies or to connect with friends didn’t hinder DeSanctis’ determination. She embraced each opportunity to connect with people and experience the diverse landscapes that make up the American Discovery Trail.

This trail, often compared to the illustrious Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails, weaves through the heart of America, uniting communities and showcasing its beautiful scenery. John Fazel, co-founder of the American Discovery Trail Society, summed it up perfectly by saying, “More than 20 million people live within 10 miles of the trail.”
DeSanctis holds dear the warm memories of her journey, mainly the connections she formed with people along the way. Their kindness, companionship, and unity had a lasting impact, truly capturing the essence of her adventure.
“I don’t think it has sunk in yet. It’s just weird to be done,” said the proud 40-year-old hiker.

“Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something that you want to do. You can’t live your life in fear,” said an invigorated and cheerful DeSanctis.
