Roll on over to the theatres, it’s time for all the skater boys and girls to unite for a nostalgic trip. ’70s movies have their own charm, From the small-town suburban household aesthetic to the rebellious teens that want more from their lives, ’70s movies, although formulaic, never fail to deliver. And this is definitely true for today’s subject ‘Skateboard,’ which is filled with nostalgia pops with some surprisingly profound elements of storytelling. “Why are we talking about a movie from 1978,” I hear you ask. It’s because it’s making a big nostalgia return to the big screens.

That’s right, ‘Skateboard’ is back with a bang and ready to be the newest retro nostalgia trip. The movie is the perfect flick for the rebellious punk in you, whether that was laid to rest today or 30 years ago.

The film follows Manny (played by Allen Garfield), who finds himself struggling to keep his business afloat. Neck-deep in bills, debt, and circling loan sharks, Manny is left with very few options to make things work. He stoops to his last resort, which is tapping into the youth market of skateboarding. With all on the line for Manny, he assembles a group of rag-tag teens to help him execute his vision.

Still, success comes at a price, especially in this feature dripping with nostalgia and craving for the days of old. The film is a beautiful coming-of-age story and an ode to any love that anyone has ever felt for skateboarding.

The Talent Behind ‘Skateboard’

The film was written by Director George Gage alongside Producer Dick Wolf and is filled with nostalgia and skateboarding love. It features ’70s heartthrobs like Kathleen Lloyd, Leif Garrett, Steve Manohan, and Richard Van der Wyk among other starlit names. The feature also really taps into the heart of skateboarding, with the inclusion of skateboarding legend Tony Alva as Tony Bluetile and iconic freestyler Ellen O’Neal in the cast.

Since 1978, skateboarding has seen some very high highs, becoming a big part of rock and punk culture. The skater revolution was also built on the backs of hypebeast brands like Supreme, Ed Hardy, and Billabong. The contributions of Tony Hawk can hardly go unmentioned in the conversation either.
