Williams’ family once could not afford to have a decent area to live in because of their economic conditions is wrong. Richard Williams believed in the tough training of both of his daughters, Venus and Serena Williams. And that is exactly what he wanted with their upbringing too. He wanted to raise them into rough and tough human beings, both on and off the court.

Williams sisters are two of the most celebrated tennis players of all time. And their early training was done by no other than their father and first coach, Richard Williams.

Richard Williams on why he chose Compton for Venus and Serena Williams 

Things were not bad for the Williams family financially. They could have easily shifted to a different and safer area. However, Richard Williams was of the belief that his children needed to be rough and tough, both in their training and upbringing. In an old interview, the father opened up about his rough traits of Compton.

He said, “There was no place in the world that was rougher than Compton.” He stated, “The ghetto will make you rough, it’ll make you tough, it’ll make you strong. And so that’s why I went to Compton with them.”

Compton delivered on what it promised. It turned Venus and Serena Williams into very tough and tough tennis players. However, it was not safe for the Williams family, as they also saw the unfortunate demise of their eldest sister Yetunde Price. This shook the two Williams sisters in a grave manner.

Venus on how they grew up as kids in Compton

The elder sister once detailed how they were always protected when they were kids. She also mentioned the fact that their leader sisters might have known, but they always kept them a shield from the unsafe elements of Compton.

She also talked about how they would duck down on the court while practicing when a car backfired. Or how they continued practicing when a man started shooting rounds from his car. These rough surroundings were home to the two sisters. And, they grew up here and when they went out, went out to become two of the greatest tennis players of all time.
