Throughout the last decade, age has become less of an issue for athletes. As players used to retire after touching 30, they now play till they turn 40, and some play even after that. Venus Williams is one such player. At the age of 43, Williams is still competing on tour and aims to win another slam before she eventually hangs up the racket. In the mid 30s, Angelique Kerber praised the seven-time grand slam champions for persevering for so long. But she has no plans of following the model herself.
Although Angelique Kerber is one of the more dominant players, she is not on tour now. She announced a hiatus after Wimbledon last year as she and partner Franco Bianco were expecting. While she delivered the baby in February, the German player shared a picture of her pregnant glow on social media, which made fans’ hearts melt.

Although her younger sister is retired, Queen V is still competing at the highest level. After her absence from the tour at the start of the season, Williams is back to compete at the age of 43, an age when athletes are kicking back in retirement. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed by anyone, as Angelique Kerber, former number 1, praised Williams for her passion.

In a recent interview with Bild, the 35-year-old mentioned Williams’ achievements and praised her for the enthusiasm she continues to exhibit on the court. At the same time, however, Kerber stated that she has no plans to follow in the footsteps of the seven-time grand slam champion.
“Hats off to what she does. She still has this passion. But it is not necessarily my planning to play till 43. Then probably more as a trainer.”

She was probed about her last sentence about whether she wanted to be a trainer. Kerber believes that she still has a lot to offer to her career as a player. Yet, she reaffirmed that she does not plan on playing till her early 40s.
“It is a little early for such considerations, because my goals are now different. I will see what my role in tennis will look like later, but probably no longer with 43 as an active player.”
