When the 23-time Grand Slam champion announced her retirement, every tennis enthusiast took a trip down the memory lane. Along with the many fans, former American tennis ace, Andy Roddick also expressed his gratitude and admiration.

Roddick about Venus and Serena Williams’ way of training

While in an interview with the tennis channel, Roddick spoke about his fellow Rick Macci’s students. He said, “Frankly, a lot of us in the academy were like you can’t actually become a professional without playing competitive matches in juniors. How ridiculous is that?”

“Well, guess who is ridiculous? All of us who were second guessing Venus and Serena for their process,” the former World no.1 added. Both Serena and Venus in their teenage days trained under their father and the world renowned American tennis coach Macci. They received a very distinct and not so tennis like guidance. As Richard believed in increasing their skills rather than throwing them into junior tournaments.

The former World no.1s debuted in the 90s and stormed their way to glory on every surface. Serena Williams claimed her first ever Grand Slam trophy in the year 1999 in the US Open and now is ready to end her career in the same tournament.

Williams, after taking an opening round exit at Wimbledon, claimed her first victory of this season in the National Bank Open. She defeated Nuria Parrizas-Diaz on Centre Court at Toronto. However, she failed in the next around against Belinda Bencic and is currently looking forward to the Cincinnati Masters.

The six-time US Open champion will lock horns with Emma Raducanu on the hard courts of Cincinnati. They will square off for the first time and will be eyeing a spot in the last 32 of the WTA 1000 event.
