In the end, it wasn’t the result that Serena Williams had wished for. The 23-time Grand Slam champion gave her all but couldn’t overcome the challenge of Belinda Bencic in the second round of the National Bank Open. The Swiss star won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Following the match, Serena Williams got emotional during the post-match interview as she played her last match in Canada. During the post-match press conference, Bencic opened up about her special victory over Serena. She said, “Yeah, I mean, of course, it’s really special. And in a way, I’m also kind of part of her whole path and career and which makes it like really special for me. Of course, I always say that I never imagined, you know, ever playing against her. And not even saying that winning and also that I beat her twice now in Toronto.”

Further, she added, “Of course, it’s super nice, but today it’s a little bit more sad in a way. I don’t really want her to retire. I feel like I’ve always, in a way you know what she’s achieved and everything, all her legacy, and career, and everything. But now that it’s soon to be over I feel like people, and me included, are realizing it even more.”

Talking about taking away the memories from Toronto, Bencic said, “So it’s like, yeah, just standing on the court against her today was just, yeah, really overwhelming, I would say. And also the first time or the first time I beat her here was also really nice. So it’s going to be incredible memories for me.”
