Earlier this month, Serena Williams shocked the world with her decision to retire from tennis shortly after making her comeback. While the decision had been coming for many years, it was a sudden announcement from the American legend, especially just months after returning to the tour. As the 40-year-old nears retirement, her long-time friend, Eva Longoria, backed her decision to hang up her boots.

Serena Williams has been in the news ever since she made a comeback to the Tour. After a lengthy injury layoff due to a hamstring injury, the 23-time Grand Slam champion made a comeback during the grass-court season. However, she didn’t have the best of results, as she made a first-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships.

Eva Longoria on Serena Williams’ retirement

The younger Williams sister shares a close-knit bond with the American actress, Eva Longoria. During an interview, the latter talked about Serena’s retirement from tennis. She said, “She’s absolutely right. If this were a different time, if the genders were switched, she wouldn’t have to take years off to breastfeed. Years off from healing from a C-section and a near-death experience.”

Further, the Hollywood star went on to add, “She also mentions that she’s no different than any other mother, [playing tennis professionally] just happens to be her career.”

With this, Serena ends an illustrious career that has seen her achieve tremendous success on the tennis court. Moreover, she has been at the top of her game for more than 25 years, dominating her opponents in every part of the globe. Along with her achievements in tennis, she has also fought for gender and racial equality in society.

Why did Serena announce retirement from tennis?

The younger Williams sister, through an article in Vogue, announced that she will quit tennis after the US Open this year. She said, “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”
