Tennis, unlike weightlifting and other such games, does not categorize players based on their bulk or weight. However, often tennis fans raise a finger at players who have bulkier physiques than others. Especially in women’s tennis, where many people expect every entity to be more on feminine-side. Therefore, when such players start outshining others, they get accused of not playing fair.

One of the earliest examples of the same is Martina Navratilova. Navratilova was the only player who matched the caliber of American tennis ace Chris Evert. But owing to her build, people often accused her and pitied Evert. Though Evert never paid heed to such talks.

Evert earlier in an interview spoke about how her fellow tennis ace faced unjust criticism. She shared that at the height of her rivalry with Navratilova, people would often approach her and say, “You know, I never liked that Martina. She’s so tough. I’d say, ‘You know what? She’s a kitten. She really is. I’m the hard one.'”

 “They’d say ‘no, no, no – not you. You’re so frail and feminine. We always felt sorry for you.’ It was as if Martina became the bully to some people. And I was the person who could silence the bully.” Evert added.

Further, similar to the 18 times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams also suffered such allegation. However, this time there was no one to pity because no other WTA player could hold a candle to her. Also, Navratilova herself took the initiative to put such thinking to bed. She spoke on several occasions in support of the 23 times Grand Slam champion.

What are Navratilova and Evert doing now?

Both the former World no.1s, after presenting one of the greatest rivalries of tennis, are contributing to the sport in other fashion. While the Czech American is a regular BBC commentator, Evert is part of ESPN’s broadcasting team. The channel also delivered the news of her stage one ovarian cancer to the fans.
