Simona Halep Reunites With Former Coach After Parting Ways With Darren Cahill

After putting an end to one of the most successful player-coach relationships on the WTA tour, Simona Halep included former Romanian Davis Cup player Adrian Marcu to her coaching team. Halep had announced her split with Cahill a few days ago.

Daniel Dobre, who was there in Halep’s team when she won her first Wimbledon crown in 2019, will continue alongside Marcu for the upcoming events on the women’s circuit.

Incidentally, Marcu coached the Romanian in 2013 and ensured her footing inside the top-20 for the first time in her career. During their short partnership, Halep managed to win three titles (New Haven, Moscow, and WTA Finals).

Under coach Darren Cahill, Simona Halep climbed to the top place in 2017 and even won the French Open the following year, defeating the likes of Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza, and Sloane Stephens.

When Halep won her first Wimbledon title, Cahill was at home (Australia) owing to family commitments but remained in touch with the Romanian and helped her cross the finish line. Currently, Halep is ranked at World No. 14 in the WTA rankings and she is all set to play the Indian Wells event next week.

During her run at the WTA 1000 event, both Marcu and Dobre will be part of Halep’s entourage.

“I expect her to play as well as possible,” – Marcu on Halep’s future tournaments

Talking about this new partnership, Marcu said, “I expect her to play as well as possible in the next period and return to a very good shape. I want her to win as many matches as possible so that she can jump back up in the rankings”.

After withdrawing from her second round match against Kerber at the Italian Open due to a calf tear, Halep skipped Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She finally made her comeback at the US hard-court season, where she couldn’t regain the lost form instantly.

Even at the US Open, the Romanian managed to reach the fourth round, where she lost to Elina Svitolina. This season also witnessed Halep drop out of top-10 for the first time since 2014. Hopefully, Adrian Marcu and Daniel Dobre will ensure a better end to this year on the WTA tour for Halep.
