American tennis legend Serena Williams has announced her retirement plans. While we look back at her career, it is probably the best effort from an American in modern-day tennis. However, former tennis star, Nicolas Pereira believes that she could have done even better.

The 51-year-old was all praise for Serena in a recent podcast. He also analyzed how Serena could have done better in her career.

Nicolas Pereira on Serena Williams’ career

Speaking about the unbelievable records the American has broken and created, Pereira asserted how she faced various challenges which might have slowed her down. He felt that the former world number 1 could have achieved more if she got more game time earlier.

“I thought she could have won more earlier. But there were the distractions, the injuries. Different factors that didn’t allow her, but she straightened the ship and took a new course and was a trailblazer herself,” he said.

Further, the 51-year-old added. “After the age of 30 and just kept surprising us with great tennis and on parallel, she had no competition there for a while.”

In general, the prime of a tennis player is before the age of 30. However, Serena has proved that wrong by winning 10 Grand Slam titles after turning 30.

Serena loses to Emma Raducanu

Since her retirement declaration, every match Serena plays will be exciting for fans, irrespective of the result. However, for the legendary player herself, it has been disappointing. She couldn’t make it to the third round of the National Bank Open and later faced Emma Raducanu in her tournament opener in the Cincinnati Masters.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had no response to the fiery gameplay of the 19-year-old Brit. The defending US Open champion was dominating from the start and took the first set 6-4. She was even more ruthless in the second set and bagled Serena.
