When Venus Williams announced her comeback on the WTA Tour at the Citi Open, her eyes were on a bigger picture lying ahead. Despite being away from the court for months and rising suspense over her retirement, the American legend quashed retirement rumors and won her comeback match at the Citi Open comfortably against Peyton Stearns. Although she lost in the following match against Magdalena Frech, Williams was eyeing the US Open, her home Grand Slam tournament, where she had tasted success twice. With just a few days to go for the tournament, Williams will achieve another rare feat at the last major tournament of the season.
Earlier today, the wildcard spots for the singles competition at the US Open were announced. Unsurprisingly, Williams was among the eight wildcard entrants, who will directly appear in the main draw of the singles event. With this, Williams became the oldest player in the main draw at the US Open since Renee Richards, who competed at the age of 47 in 1981. Williams will be 45 when she steps onto the courts in Flushing Meadows, as she defies age to give her fans something to cheer at the US Open.

Meanwhile, Williams is fit and rearing to go at the US Open. Last week, she lost in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters but explained why that loss felt like a blessing in disguise for Williams. She stated, “Coming off of this match, I feel amazing. So that means that in this next period [ahead of the US Open] I won’t have to fix injuries. Now I can work on power and speed instead of trying to just make sure I’m not hurt going into the tournament.”

Nonetheless, Williams will have her task cut out at the US Open, and it is likely that she will face a top star upfront. Even before her singles commitment, the American legend will be seen in action at Flushing Meadows.
Venus Williams set to feature in mixed doubles
Although the elder Williams sister hasn’t announced her retirement yet, the upcoming US Open could be the last time that she will feature in this tournament. Thus, Williams wants to leave no stone unturned and will also feature in mixed doubles. Williams, along with Reilly Opelka, is set to team up for the 2-day extravaganza. Moreover, Williams has already outlined her objectives for the upcoming mixed doubles format.

During an interview, she stated, “Usually, I don’t play much after the US Open, so you probably won’t see me after the tournament this year. But for next year, don’t count me out too much! The only major final I’ve never played is the mixed doubles final at the US Open. So, it’s kind of a priority for me to play it, because it’s the only thing I’ve never accomplished in tennis. I’ve always been very close to the winner’s circle in everything I’ve done throughout my career.”
Nonetheless, her primary goal here is to achieve success in the singles format. It could be testing times for the American legend ahead but she is set to thrive in those conditions, which could play in her favor.
