LA Wildfires, that began wreaking havoc two weeks ago, have caused devastating damages. Over 10,000 structures burnt down and turned to debris, with 27 people killed, according to NBC on January 18. Not to mention cases of looting and theft. And among those who have lost their valuable possessions is also WTA icon and 21-time Grand Slam winner in doubles, Pam Shriver. She’s been left dejected after losing multiple trophies, including many from her Major victories. Needless to say Shriver is furious about it and has got a strong message for the culprits.
The Hall of Famer was on a vacation with her children when the wildfires broke out in Los Angeles. When she came back, one of her nearby families helped her get to a safe hotel in Marina del Rey. On Thursday, however, Pam Shriver faced the true disaster. Her parked car outside the hotel room was stolen. But what concerned her the most was that the car had many Major trophies won by Shriver. Now, they are all gone!
Later, talking to CNN, the former American WTA pro revealed her pain. She couldn’t believe people could be selfish for their own motives even in times like these. When asked about what she would like to say to the thieves, Shriver said, “I think the message is: ‘You’re pathetic for you to prey on people that are at their most vulnerable times, evacuating from one of the worst natural disasters. And if you think that’s the right time to suddenly be an opportunist and take something that’s not yours, that’s cruel.'”

However, Shriver still tried to look at the brighter side, mentioning that what she’s “trying to do is really lean into so many people who are helping and from first responders and just lean into all the positives that are going on.” As of now, the police is still investigating the case in the aftermath of the LA wildfires.
Meanwhile, the tennis world is continuing to help reduce damages caused by the wildfires.

Prominent names from tennis world come forward to reduce loss following LA wildfires
Since the wildfires broke out on January 7, many renowned players have tried to make key contributions towards the relief funds in order to help those affected. Take for example World No.4 and California-native Taylor Fritz. He gave away his first round prize money from the Australian Open (around $82,000) to the wildlife relief efforts. “Southern California is my home, and I spent a long time in LA. I’m doing whatever I can to assist,” he said during a post-match interview in the tournament.
His kind act ended up inspiring his compatriots too. World No.16 Madison Keys, who’s now into the quarterfinal round of the first Major down under, eventually donated $20,000 to the LA Fire Department.
Meanwhile, World No.3 and 2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff expressed her sorrow for people affected in the wildfires. After her first round encounter against compatriot Sofia Kenin, she left a heartfelt message on the courtside camera’s lens. “Stay strong LA, Thank you firefighters!” wrote the 20-year-old.

Polish star and former World No.1 Iga Swiatek also made a similar gesture few days back. “Sending my love to Malibu and LA,” wrote the Pole on the courtside camera’s lens after her first round match against Katerina Siniakova. The intensity of wildfires has now slowed down but people will take a while to recover and live normally. But as they say, time heals everything. That’s exactly one would hope for, going forward.
