CM Punk is arguably one of the most divisive figures currently active in the pro wrestling world. While he is respected by many wrestling fans and industry insiders, he’s equally detested by a substantial crowd, including veterans. The Second City Saint is scheduled to make his comeback at Collision, AEW’s new weekly show. This will be his first AEW appearance since the infamous All Out media scrum in 2022.

However, days before his return, Punk has courted controversy by giving another explosive interview. This time, he addressed a lot of issues, including his role in the alleged sabotage of 43-year-old Colt Cabana’s career in the company.

The now infamous AEW All media scrum gained notoriety as CM Punk went on a rant against a bunch of his colleagues. But the seeds of his frustration were sown by “Hangman” Adam Page. Before defending his AEW World Championship against Punk, Page took an unscripted jibe at him during their segment before their title match at Double or Nothing 2022.

This left Punk baffled, and he met the then-champion to understand the source of his commentary. Speaking to ESPN, Punk said Page told him that he tried to get fellow wrestler Colt Cabana fired from the company. Though Punk clarified that he “never” asked the promotion’s owner, Tony Khan, for any such favor, the outlet reported that many in the company do not believe Punk.

Among those who do not believe Punk is The Elite, a stable comprising AEW wrestlers Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and Page. The media scrum led to a backstage brawl and subsequent suspension of those involved, including Punk. This didn’t end with the slugfest as lawyers got involved, resulting in lawsuits.

However, CM Punk is no stranger to lawsuits either. He in the past has been involved in several such proceedings, one of which was against Cabana. But why did the two friends file lawsuits against one another?

From close friends to foes: The CM Punk-Colt Cabana saga

Punk and Cabana grew up together in the wrestling business. They attended the same wrestling school and started in Ring of Honor. The duo even made it to WWE, but had opposite careers. While Punk rose through the ranks to capture the coveted WWE and World Heavyweight Championships, Cabana, as ‘Scotty Goldman’, didn’t have the same success.

The friendship was strong until Punk appeared on his friend’s Art of Wrestling podcast in 2014. He did a no-holds-bar interview and accused a number of people in the WWE, including Dr. Chris Amann, the promotion’s doctor at the time, during the chat. This led to WWE and the doctor filing lawsuits against Punk and Cabana. While he won, it also emerged that those two wrestlers had filed lawsuits against each other.

This ended the friendship and brought with it allegations and bitterness. The 43-year-old Cabana is currently working with the AEW and was seen wrestling in ROH in the recent past. Meanwhile, Punk is set for his grand return and will team up with Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler to face Samoa Joe, Jay White, and Juice Robinson on the first episode of AEW Collision.
