In 2014, Ross would leave the WWE and serve as the lead announcer for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He would also work in the independent circuit. Due to his massive draw as a commentator, finding work was easy. He would return to the WWE from 2017 to 2019. Ross then took the next step in his storied career as he signed with AEW in 2019 and is currently still working there.

On his podcast, Grilling JR, he recently made an announcement that took the AEW fans by storm. He announced that he would be taking some time off from the company. Ross said, “I’m gonna take some time off starting this week; I’m not going to be at Collision this week.” JR is someone who has dealt with a number of health issues that he connected to his stressful line of work during his prime.

Ross continued, “Being off the airplane for a few weeks would be good for my leg to heal.” Ross has been a vital part of the commentary team for the WWE in their rise to fame during the Attitude Era. However, he has not stayed in the best of health recently, which prompted this sudden leave. His impact in pro wrestling has resonated with old and young fans alike. Some of the best calls by Jim Ross in the WWE

When it comes to some of the most iconic lines, commentators have said most of them belong to JR. One of the earliest can be “Stone Cold! Stone Cold! Stone Cold!” JR screamed at the top of his voice when the Rattle Snake won the WWE Championship from Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV. This started the Austin Era, and JR was the first to attribute that tag.

People today mock Michael Cole for the over-the-top commentary he occasionally does, but when JR said, “Good God Almighty, They’ve Killed Him!” fans believed it. This took place when The Undertaker tossed Mankind off the steel cage at King of the Ring in 1998.
