Speaking on this topic, Jake Roberts commented he feels it would have been a great storyline for ‘The American Nightmare’ to have an AEW World title run in the promotion. Let’s dive deep and find out what the WWE Hall of Famer had to say about it.

He said, “They [AEW] made it a thing thinking that fans would forget sooner or later. Or there’ll be a stipulation put in there. You know somebody said that okay to drop that he can have the belt. If he can beat me, he can have the belt. You know how that sh*t goes, man.”
“There’s always a way out, man. That’s the reason they make rules and sh*t. Bones and rules were made to break,” he added. But AEW never gave a World title run to the 6’1 star. Thus, Roberts believes that the promotion should not have gone with this approach and given him run instead.

But why was ‘The American Nightmare’ stripped of the opportunity? Actually, it was the former AEW star himself, who was behind this big decision.
AEW came up with an alternate for Rhodes
On 11/06/2019 at AEW Dynamite, the 37-year-old star made an announcement if he lost his world title match at AEW Full Gear, then he would stop pursuing the AEW World Championship. His opponent for the event was Chris Jericho. Because of MJF‘s interruption during his match, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to win the title.

However, the Jacksonville-based promotion compensated for this by giving the wrestler a run with another title. AEW unveiled a new championship on March 2020. It was the AEW TNT Champion. On May 23, ‘The American Nightmare’ fought and defeated Lance Archer to become the inaugural TNT Champion at AEW Double Or Nothing.
