Lawler’s journey began in 1970 as a disc jockey working in Memphis, Tennessee. Coming across wrestling promoter Aubrey Griffith, the two struck up a deal. Lawler would give Griffith free promotion for free wrestling training. This would result in Lawler debuting as a wrestler in 1971 and winning a battle royal for a local promotion.

This was the humble origins of one of the most recognized commentators in the WWE. However, Lawler’s health hasn’t always been on his side. With age comes natural health issues, and in the case of The King, it was his heart. Recently, Lawler was spotted at the Memphis Comic Expo looking healthier than ever. This was the first image of Lawler since his hospitalization in early 2023. With white facial hair and a big smile, Lawler gave the camera a double thumbs up.

The health issues regarding his heart have plagued Lawler for over a decade. During the September 10, 2012 episode of WWE RAW, Lawler suffered a heart attack while live at the broadcast table. This was the first heart attack Lawler would suffer, but not the last. In February 2023, he would suffer a stroke.

Although he would recover from it, he had to undergo surgery. Reports would claim that Lawler was recovering well at home, but wrestling veteran Dutch Mantell had something else to say. On his Story Time podcast, Mantell would say that Lawler was unable to finish sentences. This worried fans. However, with the image of a healthy Lawler now online, fans can rest easy knowing he’s okay. But what caused his first heart attack while on air?

Lawler blames Dolph Ziggler for his first heart attack

The cause of the first heart attack was traced back to the match Lawler had earlier. Lawler had teamed up with Randy Orton against CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler. During the match, Ziggler hit Lawler with multiple stiff elbow drops to the chest. Despite knowing his age, Ziggler did not take mercy on the then 61-year-old Lawler. Lawler resumed his commentary duties after the match when disaster struck.

While Michael Cole was on play-by-play duty, he noticed Lawler was snoring. This was not typical behavior, and he immediately called for a doctor. Lawler had to be removed from ringside and taken to the emergency room. The pain was audible in Cole’s voice as he announced to those watching at home what had just transpired behind the cameras. Despite being a heel commentator, this moment brought out the real Cole. Despite what Lawler went through, he is now healthy, happy, and celebrating and cherishing life.
