For any WWE fan, kayfabe is the fuel that drives the machine. It is what separates the real from the reel. Now when that barrier is broken, it can often affect really good storylines in the WWE. There have been times when outside interferences caused hindrances to amazing WWE storytelling. And when that happens, Vince McMahon gets really angry.

An effective kayfabe storyline is vital to the ‘Entertainment’ aspect of the WWE. Without a good storyline, wrestlers will hit each other for 3 hours. There won’t be a reason to get invested in it. These storylines are why people love the WWE and why McMahon hates it when they end prematurely.

Vince McMahon loved the Rusev and Lana storyline

In 2015, according to the storyline, Lana left Rusev to join Dolph Ziggler during the Rusev Ziggler feud. Rusev, heartbroken, got Summer Rae involved to be a discount version of Lana. The storyline showcased Rusev in a relationship with Rae while Lana was with Ziggler. The story was fun, with two incredible wrestlers putting on some really splendid matches. However, it also turns out to be one of McMahon’s favorite storylines.

On the most recent episode of “Insight with Chris Vliet” podcast, his guest was Summer Rae. During the podcast, Rae recounted the storyline and revealed that McMahon was really angry when the storyline ended due to leaks by TMZ. “That really set Vince off, and like everyone because I don’t know why, but we were like his favorite storyline of him,” she said.

The context was that TMZ leaked the story that Rusev and Lana were engaged in real life during the peak of the storyline. This ruined the credibility of the storyline, as the two supposedly hated each other, according to Kayfabe. This led to the storyline ending abruptly on the October 12, 2015, episode of WWE Raw. Rae called out Rusev for being engaged to Lana and using her. This differed from the planned ending for the storyline.

According to Rae, McMahon was very upset and frustrated at this leak by TMZ, which forced them to change the storyline’s ending. Similarly, the writers were upset as they spent three months crafting the storyline. Despite the hard work, there was never a proper conclusion or payoff to the storyline.

Another disappointing element contributes to misery.

It was among the longest storylines at that time

While on the podcast, Rae also mentioned that this was one of the longest storylines. She compared it to the long storylines of today that last over months. According to her, at the time, Cena had a four-month-long storyline, and there were in the third month. This was something not seen before in 2015. Rae also said that all four loved working with each other and then had a lot of fun doing it.

The Rusev Ziggler feud peaked at SummerSlam 2015, where the two had a match. This would be the first instance of Lana and Rae getting involved in the match resulting in a double count-out. This would be the build-up to Lana and Rae facing off in a singles match, while Rusev and Ziggler got a rematch to end the feud. However, none of that panned out as TMZ leaked the engagement story of Rusev and Lana. This ended the storyline abruptly, angering McMahon.
