From the ‘Boom Period’ of the 80s to the ‘Attitude Era’ of the 90s, WWE tried its best to provide fans with top-notch entertainment. However, each era also faced its fair share of criticism.

When it comes to the current Modern era of the WWE, the amount of criticism outweighs the appreciation. The fans who grew up watching multiple eras of WWE always tend to criticize the current bookings more than the new generation. Recently, WWE superstar John Cena took a subtle dig at these long-time hardcore fans, explaining how the change in the WWE worked these past 70 years.

John Cena explains why fans like certain WWE eras

Recently, John Cena appeared on the newest season of ‘Hart to Heart‘, a show hosted by Hollywood star and comedian Kevin Hart. During the show, the ‘Cenation Leader’ also opened up about a topic that most of the WWE superstars avoid.

John Cena mentioned that the wrestling business has changed a lot since he started. When Hart asked him if it has changed for better or for worse, he didn’t hesitate to reply that it has changed for the better.

Cena explained that it’s a generational thing. If you ask people who are fans of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair. and other 80s legends, they will be fans of the 70s and 80s WWE as that was what they grew up watching. For the fans who grew up watching the Attitude era, they will always say it was the best. The same goes for the fans who are watching the current superstars.

The reason why old WWE fans mostly criticize the current era is because it is a lot different from the one they grew up watching. Fans won’t be able to romanticize an era if they did not grow up watching it.

Talking to Kevin Hart, John Cena said, “It’s also a generational product like I’ll talk to older folks they’ll be like ‘Oh I grew up with Hulk Hogan and Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair and Macho Man Randy Savage’. And then, there are people like, ‘Ah The Attitude Era’ with folks that grew up watching me. And then, there’s the current generation that watches the current Superstars and you know comments and critiques appreciate that product.”

Cena said that just because long-time hardcore fans don’t understand the modern era, it doesn’t mean that it’s bad. The only difference is that they have a different “sweet spot“.

“I just don’t understand a lot of the other stuff…… But it doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s just that I have like kind of my sweet spot……. The stuff that I romanticize about.”, Cena continued.

Cena explains why WWE is cautious about its changes now

Cena talked about how WWE had to make a number of changes when it shifted from a TV-14 rating to a PG rating. The main reason behind this shift was the sponsorship. Several advertisers were drifting away from the company because they were looking to appeal to families. Changing the rating to PG was an attempt to keep the sponsors with WWE.

Moreover, the increasing audience of minors in the professional wrestling world was also a reason.

With the initiation of the PG era, ruthless aggression and unfiltered promos were no longer possible. This made the older fans feel like WWE was moving away from its original vision.

But if we go with John Cena’s words, the change was necessary as the company’s fanbase was exponentially increasing. However, it doesn’t mean WWE lost its original essence. It just means the officials have to be more cautious as the company is influencing way more people than it used to in the past.
