A little less than a year ago, Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair starred in arguably one of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history. They both faced each other for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. This matchup came to fruition after Ripley won the Royal Rumble. This naturally paved the way for talks to revolve around this match headlining the first night of WrestleMania.

However, this fight, contrary to what many believed, was not the main event, as it had two bouts ahead of it. So in a recent interview, she opened up on losing the spot at WrestleMania 39.

Mami had a point to prove

In an interview with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, Rhea Ripley shared her thoughts on her match being made the semi-main event of the night. However, it didn’t seem like she minded missing her spot, due to loving the men’s storyline. She said, “I understand why we weren’t Main Event. I do. I have to give it to the guys. They had a very compelling storyline going into WrestleMania. To the point that Mami was interested and Mami wanted to see who was going to come up victorious.”

She further added, “But obviously being the Royal Rumble winner, I wanted that main event spot so extremely bad. So going out there as a semi-main, I did have a point to prove I wanted to show everyone. That we could have Main evented ,if given the opportunity to have a proper build to WrestleMania you know. So I understand. I completely understand. No hate to the boys but was a little bit jealous.”

However, in another recent interview on NotSamWrestling, she commented on her WrestleMania 39 match. She stated that both wrestlers had the potential to have been the match that closed night 1 of the Showcase of the Immortals. In addition, Ripley also stated that, as the winner of the Women’s Royal Rumble last year, she initially believed that her match would be the main event of night 1. But she recognizes that the good work done by Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and the Usos, along with a well-worked rivalry, led WWE to change plans and place the tag team match at the top of the card.
