Over 13,000 people inside the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia and millions worldwide witnessed the WWE crowing Seth Rollins as its inaugural World Heavyweight Champion. While the title had its roots etched in the past, the promotion disbanded its use before being brought back earlier this year. Since his crowning on May 27, Rollins has endured a troubling journey. He has had more title defenses than once partner Roman Reigns, who has enjoyed an unparalleled success.

The work put in by The Visionary has paid dividends, as evident by a recent development. To celebrate his success, Rollins took to the social media platform X, where he relived his days as a member of The Shield. This led many fans to recall their memories of the heel faction, who dominated the promotion for a significant while.

Why did Seth Rollins choose to celebrate with The Shield throwback?

Gone are the days when Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Jon Moxley, the erstwhile Dean Ambrose, terrorized the roster in WWE. Debuting in November 2012, the three men gained notoriety for their sneak attacks and running through everything that the promotion held sacred.

While The Shield parted ways in June 2014, with Reigns choosing to be on his own, the three had tremendous success during their run. Barring Moxley, who has become a mainstay in AEW since inking a deal with the rival promotion in 2019, the two other members have stayed with the Stamford-based company, enjoying a run as current champions.

In a recently released list of 500 top-performing wrestlers by Pro Wrestling Illustrated, The Monday Night Messiah bagged the top spot. While that should make him and his supporters happy, it was a dream come true moment for The Shield’s fans as Reigns and Moxley got ranked second and third, respectively.

Soon after the list was out, Rollins celebrated with an iconic throwback picture that features the trio combining their fists. This had the fans rolling in nostalgia.

The WWE Universe hails The Shield as the greatest

After being disbanded, Rollins and Moxley, then Ambrose, joined forces in 2017 to form a tag team. When they received backing from The Big Dog, it signaled the re-formation of the faction. So, for many young fans who grew up watching WWE programs in the 2010s, the vigilantes in black formed a part of their formative pro wrestling experiences.

Some of them, like this fan, have hailed them as the greatest tag team in the rich history of the promotion.

Another user used the same adjective to describe The Shield and shared a similar sentiment.

Meanwhile, one fan speculated if Rollins hinted at something else with his tweet. While there’s a slim chance of this happening, if it does, a part of the WWE Universe will surely go into a frenzy.

As stated above, Rollins, Reigns, and Moxley started in the early 2010s and sporadically continued till the end of the decade. So, this compliment isn’t technically incorrect.

Imagine wrestling so well that your absence is talked about almost half a decade later. Also, as per the admission, this was a costly miss, as the trio put on some outstanding performances to keep the promotion relevant at a time when several of their big names were slowly moving to other avenues.
