“Not So Much Nowadays”: Veteran John Cena Once Spoke About a Harrowing WWE Trend While Comparing Eras

With time wrestling industry has evolved a lot. Whether it’s about the storyline or the company policies, everything has changed. Even John Cena once recalled the earlier days of his wrestling when seasonal releases were usual, unlike the recent days. He also revealed that he himself was about to get fired. However, fate had some other plans for him. In 2021 and even in 2022, WWE released several wrestlers from the company. Some of them were Keith Lee, John Morrison, William Regal, and Samoa Joe. After the roster shocked everyone with these releases, Cena defended it. He said, “I think with this flux of passionate people who love sports entertainment, people do get a name for themselves outside of WWE.”

John Cena spoke about how new talents have less stress about getting fired

During Cena’s conversation in WWE After the Bell with Corey Graves on April 2, 2020, The People’s Champ compared the Ruthless Aggression Era with recent days. Back in those days, the company used to release talents twice a year. However, in his opinion, it made new talent work harder to make a name for themselves.

In the podcast, Cena said, “Back in my day, there were literally cuts twice a year, they fired people in November. And they fired people in May, because we had just taken on a lot of talent with ECW and WCW.

So there were seasonal releases, and justified, we just had too many guys,” The Prototype added.

After talking about the previous era, The Face of the WWE also reflected upon the current change. Further, he said, “Not so much nowadays, so there is maybe, and I don’t know, I don’t run, I don’t know the business.

The fortunate luck of The Cenation Leader combined with his hard work turned around his fate from getting fired to being the face of the company. Being the honest person that he is, Cena also talked about his failures in the promotion. In his initial days, he failed tremendously. Even before he knew what was going on around him, he was about to be fired. 

Things changed when the Massachusetts-born wrestler was guided. However, his only mantra to success is, “Desperation breeds creativity.

After being so close to getting fired himself, Cena now understands the sadness one goes through when he receives such bad news. He sympathizes will each wrestler who was released during the mass release of the WWE.
