This was one of the annual matches Cena performs in the promotion. Even though the 16-time world champion made an in-ring return for the first time in 16 months, he received an abundance of love.

WWE was careful with John Cena on his in-ring return

In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter by the well-known reporter, Dave Meltzer, backstage news from the last show of WWE in 2022 was talked about. In the newsletter, it was reported that everything was carefully planned and executed, given in mind about Cena’s inactivity in wrestling.

Especially, when it came to the in-ring work, the company arranged things in order to protect The Face of WWE. Assuring the highest level of protection for The Champ was the ultimate priority.

That being said, it’s evident now why the wrestler himself was less engaged in the intense fight. However, the reason behind this special treatment for the wrestler is quite rational. Cena makes sure to perform once a year for the promotion, but compared to other wrestlers, he is pretty inactive in the ring.

At the end of the match, The Massachusetts-born wrestler hit the Attitude Adjustment on Reigns. At the same time, Owens hit the Stunner on Zayn for the pin. The final move also looked as if it was pre-planned to make Cena look strong and give an edge above Reigns.

As FOX hyped the bout, the promotion wanted it to be about The Champ’s return. Therefore, he must be the hero of the battle, and thus, the last hit was needed.
