3 Reasons Why CM Punk Could Challenge Roman Reigns for His WWE Championship at Royal Rumble 2024

CM Punk made his much-anticipated return to WWE after a decade away from WWE. After a controversial and notorious exit from AEW, fans were not sure if they would ever see him in the wrestling ring. Despite WWE’s best attempts to keep things under wrap, fans kept speculating about Punk’s return to WWE. And boy, did he deliver. Punk returned at Survivor Series, that too in his hometown of Chicago.

Though he did not have a match at Survivor Series, he closed the show with a simple yet impactful appearance. He has not wrestled anyone yet, despite making two appearances to date. But we believe that he may face the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns at Royal Rumble.

1. CM Punk called out the WISEMAN in his first promo after comeback: CM Punk closed the Monday Night RAW episode at Nashville. Though he had a short promo to close the show, he mentioned the Wiseman twice. He said, “A Wiseman told me that for me to get everything that I need out of this place I’d have to leave everything and come back. Hate to say the Wiseman was right.”

Though he has not mentioned any name, the words indicate Paul Heyman. Many wrestling fans know that Heyman was an advocate of Punk during his first run in the WWE. The promo indicates that Punk now hopes to pursue his lofty ambitions after fulfilling all his goals upon his departure in 2014. And what better honor is on offer than clinching the undisputed WWE Universal title?

2. CM Punk is one of Paul Heyman’s guys: Paul Heyman has been the manager for many WWE superstars, including CM Punk. Heyman managed Punk on-screen in the year 2012. As of now, Paul Heyman is working as the Wiseman Tribal Counsel for our Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns. CM Punk could rekindle his connection with Heyman albeit in a hostile manner. The Wiseman now offers his counsel to The Tribal Chief and this could ignite a feud between Reigns and Punk, with Heyman playing a pivotal part. The battle for supremacy could get personal with Heyman being conflicted if the WWE chooses to go that way.

Hence, WWE has a legitimate case for a feud between the two superstars of the same kind as the one between Lesnar and Reigns in 2021. But what is the other clue that makes this matchup likely?

3. Big title match at Royal Rumble: Sports Illustrated reports that there will be a big feud involving Roman Reigns and CM Punk. Although they also report that Punk may feud against Rollins first, we have over two months till the Royal Rumble PLE and clues could point to the direction the WWE takes in the upcoming weeks.

Since Roman Reigns has already feuded against most of the top performers on the roster, the only one left is CM Punk. They have faced off in the past during Punk’s earlier tenure but this would be the first time where both superstars stand on equal footing in terms of their star power. Meanwhile, WWE will get enough time to keep Cody Rhodes away from Reigns till WrestleMania 40.
