John Cena made his return to the grand stage of WrestleMania after a three-year absence as a competitor. The 16-time world champion went against Austin Theory in a United States Championship match to kick off the WrestleMania 39 Night One. The match saw a passing of the torch moment as the upstart Theory beat Cena to hand ‘The Champ’ his third successive ‘Mania loss. Although there was little in the match that stood out apart from a few notorious Cena moments that the fans have become all too familiar with over the years.

‘The Doctor of Thuganomics’ has a legacy in the squared circle that a few others can match. But even an all-time great like him can do certain things that may not be seen as appropriate when it comes to in-ring action.

There aren’t many things that Cena cannot excel at when he is in between the ropes, but one particular area sticks out as a sore thumb at times. The Hollywood star isn’t subtle when it comes to calling spots in the ring. And this was again evident during his match against Theory where he loudly called out a few spots during the match.

Calling spots in a match isn’t unusual. A veteran star would usually direct the follow of the match if he is up against a younger talent in the ring, but it is usually done in a way that those watching on TV or in the audience have little to no idea of it. But with Cena that isn’t the case at times.

In footage from WrestleMania 39’s opening match doing rounds on the internet, we can see Cena audibly directing Theory to put him in a sleeper hold. While this is the footage available, there were instances of ‘Super Cena’ calling the spots loudly throughout the match.

This isn’t something new and the loud spot calling has been usually associated with Cena for some time now. It happened during the 2018 Royal Rumble as well and apart from that ‘The Champ’ has been guilty of the same on quite a few occasions. He has even admitted to this notorious habit and even acknowledged the criticism he gets because of it.

Some habits die hard, and for Cena it is his loud spot calling during the match. Cena put over Austin Theory in a match with shades of his own first-ever WrestleMania win 19 years ago, but some of the fans were less than impressed by the manner of it. It remains to be seen when the Peacemaker star will return to WWE programming next.
