Andy Murray Says Dominic Thiem Wouldn’t Have Won US Open if Novak Djokovic Hadn’t Been Defaulted

Novak Djokovic recently won his 18th Grand Slam final at the Australian Open 2021. The World No. 1 player exhibited some great skills and defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the finals. The final scoreline of the match was 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. After the match, 3-time Grand Slam champion, Andy Murray, expressed his opinions on the ‘Big Three’ vs the ‘Next-Gen’ debate.
Although the next-gen superstar Daniil Medvedev played really well, he stood nowhere near the mighty Novak Djokovic in the finals. Fans were expecting a lot from other new-gen players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem too, but they failed to deliver in crucial matches.
In a recent interview, former World No. 1 Andy Murray highlighted that he was quite disappointed with the younger guys. According to him, they have not completely shown that fighting spirit against the ‘Big Three’.

“The younger guys, for me, they’ve not shown that they’re particularly close,” said Murray in the interview. Murray certainly expected a lot from the next-gen players, and he believes that they need to improve a lot in order to win a Grand Slam title.

Murray also made a shocking claim in the same interview. Although he applauded Thiem for his US Open 2020 title, he mentioned that Djoker would probably have won it had he stayed in the tournament.
“Obviously what happened at the US Open, Thiem obviously did what he had to do to win the event but if Novak hadn’t put a ball through the line judge’s throat, it would be the same outcome I think,” added the British player.
