Novak Djokovic Leaves Behind Andre Agassi in Another Milestone at Australian Open

World No.1 Novak Djokovic is currently amidst his title-defense campaign at the Australian Open 2021. He has made it into the third round, defeating American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. In doing so, the Serbian ace achieved a new milestone at his most successful tournament.

To illustrate his success in Melbourne Park, the 33-year-old Serbian has won a record of 8 major titles there. He is also the only player to win the Australian Open for three straight years. And now, Djokovic has the highest winning percentage Down Under.

With his second-round win against Tiafoe, the six-time year-end World No.1 registered his 77 win in Australia. This helped him break the American legend Andre Agassi’s record with a margin of 0.02 points.

In fact, Novak Djokovic has the second-most wins at ‘The Happy Slam’, with Roger Federer in the first place (102). Thus, having a 90+ winning percentage details his domination in the smallest continent.

The winner of the 2019 and 2020 Australian Open, Novak will want to increase the lead in the coming days. Furthermore, he’ll look to inch closer to Federer’s haul of 102.

With 48 wins from 53 matches, the eight-time Grand Slam champion Agassi had a 90.56 winning percentage in Australia. However, the record now stands broken.

This isn’t the first time Djokovic has surpassed the legend. The Serbian broke Agassi’s record of most Australian Open titles in the Open Era (4) in 2015.

Argentine legend Guillermo Vilas sits in third-place with a winning percentage of 88.46. He secured 23 wins in 26 matches and won the tournament in 1978 and 1979.

Among the active players, only Federer and Rafael Nadal have made it onto the list. While the Swiss maestro is in fourth place with an 87.17 winning percentage, the Spaniard is eleventh with an 82.5 winning percentage.

This proves that Djokovic’s record will stay at the top for a few years. Presently, he is preparing for his third-round match against America’s Taylor Fritz.
