The success story of Roger Federer has always been one to marvel at. Apart from stretching a two-decade tennis career, clinching 20 slams, he has also managed to amass massive fortunes, thanks to his on-court and off-court brilliance. While his career prize money of $131 million defined his domination in the sport, Federer’s unmatched popularity made him a billionaire. Three years after he hung up his racket, Federer’s longtime agent has now spilled the beans on what really made the 44-year-old succeed for so long in his career and even after it was over.

On the latest episode of Any Roddick’s Served podcast, Federer’s agent, Tony Godsick, talked about his tenure with the Swiss Maestro and the experience of working with one of the Big Three icons. He also shared a key detail that made the Roger Federer successful both on and off the field. “He communicated so much,” said Godsick. “I could get him on the phone all the time, when I went out on the road with him we’d have dinner every night. He wanted to participate in his business.”

Godsick disclosed “the secret to his success and our partnership” which “has been the ability to always get him on the phone and always communicate.” He emphasized how Federer has always shown involvement in everything. And his way of treating people is another great attribute. “He wanted to make sure and it’s one of the reasons he stayed out on tour as long as he did, he wanted to make sure he had a great time out around the world. He stayed at nice hotels. We went to nice restaurants. We did cool things outside of tennis and he’d always include me.”

Godsick and the Swiss tennis icon met way back in 2005. Formerly at IMG agency, he was introduced to Federer (who had been a part of IMG himself previously) through his former client and WTA icon Monica Seles.

The bond between Godsick and Federer has been such that the two even went on to come up with the idea of a team event like Laver Cup. It was in 2017 when the tennis legend and his TEAM8 CEO first talked about introducing the now-iconic tournament, while having a car ride in Shanghai. And their brainchild has turned out to be a huge success. The 2025 edition itself drew close to 82,000 fans to the Chase Center in San Francisco. Ahead of its commencement, reports predicted it to generate $50 million in revenue over three days compared to past editions.

With the conclusion of 2025 edition of Laver Cup, Godsick and Federer are planning to offer another action-packed surprise. The 20-time slam king will soon make his return through exhibitions. While that is common knowledge, Godsick recently caught everyone’s attention with an unexpected update.

Tony Godsick teases Roger Federer’s tennis comeback with a twist

The TEAM8 CEO had a media interaction prior to the Laver Cup last month. Talking about Roger Federer’s comeback on the court, he said, “I’ve been pressuring him (Federer) a little bit, saying, ‘Come on, people want to see you play again. You can play a couple senior things,’” reported Tennis Channel on September 20.

The next few words from Godsick, however, were enough to send shockwaves across the tennis community. “We’ve been talking with Rafa a little bit about putting together a tour together. So, Roger just wanted to make sure that his knee was fine. He didn’t want to be totally broken after his career, so he gave it a little bit of time.” So does that mean Nadal will play alongside Federer in an exhibition?

Godsick clarified, “I think Rafa’s interested, I don’t want to speak for Rafa. But it would be great to see these guys out there.” But that wasn’t it. A lot more is going on behind the scenes.

Roger Federer‘s agent stated that “there’s a lot of other guys of their generation that I think would be willing to play too. Some of the biggest names are these guys who just retired, so we can probably fill some nice stadiums and venues.” Last time when the world witnessed Nadal and Federer together, it was during the 2022 Laver Cup. They both competed for Team Europe. It also happened to be Federer’s farewell tournament.

While there has been no official update yet, Federer’s response on Rafa in his interaction with CNBC, is enough to spark rumors. “I know that Rafa is also totally open to maybe play some tennis. It sounds terrible, seniors tennis, to us, but maybe we can create a tour, like a ‘Fedal Tour’ or something like that. It would be cool.” In case it becomes a reality, the ‘Fedal’ tour may end up being a dream-come-true moment for hardcore tennis lovers. After all, who wouldn’t want these two icons to reunite on the court once again.
