The man surely knows how to identify a diamond in the rough. This well-respected coach in the tennis world has trained as many as five world number-one-ranked players in his career so far. It includes the likes of Jennifer Capriati, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams. He is none other than, Rick Macci. Recently he has expressed his admiration for the 20-year-old Spaniard by comparing him with the legends of the game.

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia has got off to a lightning start to his career. He has already got the taste of summit in a world of the ‘Big Three’. Having proved his mettle earlier, the ‘Spanish Bull’ gets a heap of praise from Williams’ former coach. Let us see what he said about this prolific youngster.

The youngster from Murcia has already left his mark on the biggest stage by winning two major Grand Slam titles and four Masters 1000s so early in his career. He has proved his excellence time and again. Carlos Alcaraz is the first teenager in the Open Era to top the singles ranking in 19 years 4 months and 6 days. His extraordinary achievements and playing style have caught the eyes of many in the world. One such is Serena Williams’ childhood coach, who is quite vocal about the sport and often shares his opinions with the fans on social media. Here’s what he said on Alcaraz on his YouTube channel.

I know he has done so many things. Uh, even three years ago I called where this was going, okay I called where this is going. No one’s going undefeated okay, no one’s going to win every match you’re going to lose. Remember, the guy is 20 years old, it’s a long-term process.”

“Remember the Djoker is 36 this guy’s 20, okay. Just think of Alcaraz playing till he’s 36. But everybody’s like instant gratification, what are you doing now” Rick Macci. He went on to add, “The world has never seen a young man like this. I’ve done this for a long time and I tell everybody he’s a combination of FedererNadalDjokovic, and Agassi. He’s put all together. He’s a lot of humility, a lot of gratification and I love his game. I love his potential.”

However, this isn’t the first time Macci has praised the Spaniard earlier as well. He has praised his versatile playing style along with his calm and composed nature on the court. Rick Macci is a man with a Midas touch, and to get approval from such a well-decorated coach is no less than an achievement for the world number 2.

The story of Williams’ extremely influential coach

Along with King Richard, this 68-year-old coach has played a pivotal role in laying the foundation stone for the astonishing career of the two sisters. Macci has also been influential in the development of many superstars in tennis. He is the youngest ever to be inducted into the USPTA Hall of Fame. Currently, the coach seems to have become a fan of Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz however is having a tough time recently after losing a few tournaments consecutively. But Macci thinks otherwise. He believes these losses including the loss in the semis of the US Open is the best thing that could’ve happened to this young lad. Why? He feels the pain and agony from the loss will reignite him to achieve more in the future. A third Grand Slam in 2024? Why not, surely this is what even Alcaraz’s fans are also thinking at the moment. Can he get back his top spot next year?
